Thematic Cartography – Individual Tasks (2017/2018)

Task 1 – Choropleth & Diagram Map

Your task is to visualise population density and number of residents in powiats of Poland. Use the most current data from the Central Statistical Office of Poland. Choose appropriate format (size) of map. The map will contain all basic map components and additionally a screenshot of a histogram with break values (from AcrMap). Powiats will be labelled with its name (try to label as many of powiats as possible but they must remain readable and wellarranged), if you decide to display only some of powiats, you have to specify what methodology was used for this selection.

The map will contain also smaller map window with population density of województwa. Data is from the same data source. In this case, there is no need to include a histogram in the map.

Data (administrative layers) is stored in the folder “ThematicCartography/program0102” on the network drive adelka-nas.vsb.cz/Public. Population data is for 2014, check the web  link above to download the most current data. For joining the table to the layer you need to make some modifications.

Task 2 – Cartogram

Create a thematic map using the method of cartogram and display number of specific accidents under your condition (based on e.g. brand of cars, age of driver, cause of accident) in districts of the Czechia in January 2017. Display also the size error for each feature and in a textbox summarise your settings for cartogram creation, average error size and also your conclusion about the quality of anamorphosis. All districts will be also labelled with its name.

Task 3 – Thematic Map

Your task is to create a map displaying change of traffic accidents in districts of the Czechia between two chosen months. Display both the absolute and relative change using proper cartographic methods. Be aware that the data contains data for months cumulatively so you have to select chosen months from data.

Task 4 – Animation

Create a 2D animation of a variable that will show at least 10 time steps. Choose data you like or found on the web. Resulting video in format avi upload into a cloud and send me the link by email.
